Adult Circumcision At Gold Coast Circumcisions
Dr Michael Read performs adult male circumcision in his Southport clinic on the Gold Coast. He also performs penile circumcision on infants and boys. No hospital admission is necessary. He has a dedicated clinic facility that is focused on safety, ensuring minimal discomfort and a good cosmetic outcome.
Dr Read performed circumcisions for many years in the hospital environment but realized that the procedure is well suited to conduct in the clinic and dramatically lowers the barrier for patients to access this operation. Embarrassment, cost and anxiety are markedly reduced by avoiding hospital based treatment. We are committed to lowering impediments to circumcision. It is our interest and vocation and we value our established reputation for good outcomes.
Important Circumcision Information
- Adult circumcision surgery does not require referral. You can simply ring, make an appointment and come in and talk to me ( phone 07 5531 1170 or 18004acirc ). I will discuss the circumcision operation with you. You are under no pressure to proceed with circumcision if you decide it is not for you.
- Circumcision does not require hospital admission. We will do the operation in our clinic. If you are travelling and require same day surgery this can be arranged.
- Circumcision does not interfere significantly with work and study. You need to have the day of your surgery off work and ideally a further day or two of rest. Some enthusiastic patients do return to work the next day. If you are travelling to the Gold Coast for your surgery please plan to spend at least 1-2 days here. We can assist with your accommodation requirements.
- Pain during the circumcision and afterwards is absent or minor. A topical anaesthetic cream provides most of the numbing effect, but it is supplemented by local anaesthetic injections if necessary and by some medication to sedate and relax our patients. Many simply snooze through the circumcision. One of my patients took a call during his surgery and recounted to his caller in real time the removal of his foreskin. Other patients have photographed proceedings on mobile phones to forward to friends and relatives.
- You decide what you want. Circumcision can be performed simply because you want one. You may prefer the appearance, the enhanced hygiene and ease of management. Your girlfriend, wife or partner might simply prefer it. The accumulation of urine and smegma under the foreskin produces an offensive smell that often can’t be stopped by the most fastidious attention to cleaning.
- Foreskin removal appears to be protective against a number of STD’s particularly HIV and could be considered an insurance policy.
- We make no discrimination based on sexual preference. Teens, young men and older men, homosexual, bisexual and heterosexual all happily access our service without barriers.
- Religious and cultural reasons for circumcision are common. I see muslim men and jews who missed circumcision as infants for some reason and come to prepucial removal as adults. I see adults entering the muslim and jewish faith for the first time or marrying into traditional circumcisers.
Foreskin Problems - Medical Indications
Of course circumcision is often performed for a medical problem. Many stoical men persevere with foreskin complaints that can be readily fixed.
- The most frequent medical reason is phimosis. A tight prepuce that prevents or restricts retraction of the foreskin. Sometimes this can be subtle and only evident with an erection. I have seen men in their 40’s and 50’s that have had this all of their adult lives. You don’t have to. Often G.P.’s discourage surgery because they are unfamiliar with the significant inconvenience even minor restriction can cause.
- Paraphimosis follows phimosis as the most frequent reason men present. In this complaint the foreskin retracts and causes a restriction behind the glans causing it to swell and not allowing a return of the foreskin. This can be dangerous and require an urgent operation to correct.
- Recurrent tears of the frenulum.
- Infections. Balanitis and posthitis is common.
- Less frequently I see excessively long foreskins, issues with hair entrapment in the foreskin, specific skin problems like growths and irritating rashes.
